A Friend in Need is a Friend Indeed? Not on Facebook

What does the law have to do with whether and whom we are friends with on Facebook? A lot, at least according to the French Court of Cassation (Cour de cassation). In the case of M. Y. X. / Procureur général près la cour d’appel de Paris, the court entertained the question of the meaning and implications of ‘friendship’ on a social network in the context of a disciplinary proceeding against a lawyer. Why online friends may not always be considered ‘friends’ indeed and what are the wider implications of this decision?
